Hop, step and jump through the maze to get an early start to coding skills!

Lay out the tiles to make a maze, and then navigate through it to the robot to finish. This activity set introduces the concepts of how to give directions like a coder, using positional language. A fun moving, physical introduction to mapping and early coding skills without a screen.

The colour activity guide comes with example mazes to get you started. Children can play this activity alone or with a partner. Alone they must work out the route beforehand and then follow their own instructions exactly. With a partner, they will be guided through the maze by their partner reading out the program! Will their instructions be correct and guide them to the end to beat the challenge? If not, it’s time to debug it, by altering the coding cards! Extend the learning by adding springs and cogs to the maze, children will have to pick these up as they go to repair the robot! They will need to prioritise where they go first, instead of racing to the finish. There’s also tile blockers in the form of ‘x’ symbols which cannot be passed, unless you use a jump pack card!
